Rain, thunderstorms expected across 20 counties in latest forecast

Afternoon and night showers are expected throughout the week, except on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, which will be partly cloudy.

Nairobi and Mombasa are among several regions in Kenya expected to receive rainfall this week, with the Kenya Meteorological Department urging residents to prepare for varying weather conditions, including cold temperatures and showers.

The weekly forecast, issued on Monday, June 16, highlights that areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley itself, parts of the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands, and North-western Kenya will experience rainfall between Tuesday, June 17, and Saturday, June 21.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, the week will start with morning rains on Tuesday, followed by cloudy mornings breaking into sunny intervals on other days.

Afternoon and night showers are expected throughout the week, except on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, which will be partly cloudy.

Temperatures in these areas are forecast to drop to 6°C, at the lowest, with daytime highs of up to 27°C.

In the South-eastern lowlands, covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, the forecast indicates mainly sunny conditions during the day.

However, a few places might experience showers on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Night-time weather will remain partly cloudy. Maximum temperatures in these areas could reach 31°C, while lows could fall to 9°C.

The coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River County will receive showers in a few areas on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, during both morning and afternoon hours.

Friday and Saturday are expected to be dry and sunny, though Tuesday and Wednesday nights may still bring light showers. Temperatures are expected to range from a minimum of 22°C to highs of 31°C.
